Welder / Lead

MRSLogo_PlanePOSITION SUMMARY:

This position will repair and maintain all aspects of the rail including frogs, rail-ends, turn-outs, switch points and glue joints using arc, propane or thermite welding processes. This position will also inspect the weld after grinding to ensure no visible defects, replace defective rails where needed; and operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner. This position requires you to be able to travel to any location in the United States and to perform scheduled tasks as outlined by your supervisor or customer contact.

As a Welder / Lead you will be responsible for a 3-5 person crew. You will report to a direct supervisor that may or may not be on site with you. You will be required to manage and complete work schedules and make sure crew is at the work site on time. You may also be required to manage basic HR tasks as defined by your direct supervisor. You will also be responsible for weekly timesheet submissions and weld reports for your crew. You may also be required to manage crew expense reports and other duties as defined.

This position may require long hours in either high heat or low temperature climates with inclement weather that may be aggravated by high heat welding and physical activity.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma /GED
• 18 years of age or older
• Valid Driver’s License
• 3 years of welding experience
• The ability to operate both powered and non-powered machinery
• Ability to pass a background check and drug test
• Ability to travel for extended periods of time
• Ability to use a computer
• Experience with Word, and Excel

• Reasoning skills (problem solving and trouble shooting skills)
• Mechanical aptitude

• Willingness to learn and follow directions and tasks

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• Welding certification (or equivalent)
• Experience in Thermite Welding a Plus
• Experience in a lead or mentoring position
• Ability to prioritize and execute work outlined by your supervisor or customer
• Outside work experience (e.g. construction, heavy equipment operation, farming, landscaping)

Physical Requirements

• Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
• Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
• Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an regular basis
• Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor

Employment Conditions

• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may need to be obtained based on job assignment
• Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
• Wear protective equipment such as welding shields, hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
• Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, and various shift work
• Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examination
• Must successfully pass probationary period of 90 days.
• May require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
• Must pass all required assessments
• May require a post-offer medical examination including a physical capabilities test
• Requires frequent revision in work assignments
• Regional travel required
• Active employees must complete one year in current position or craft before applying for other positions
• This is an “at will” position and employment may be terminated at any time
